Are you trying to decide whether or not to tint your car's windows? This is how to determine if auto window tinting is a good choice for your vehicle.

Did you know that Tennessee's automobile industry rolls out a new vehicle every 20 seconds? If you are a Tennessee resident, you likely have a vehicle and might even own two within your immediate family.

Owning a vehicle comes with additional costs like maintenance and services like auto window tinting. Is vehicle tinting worth it? How do you know if it is right for your vehicle?

Keep reading to find out.

Consider Your Car's Appearance

Auto window tinting can change the appearance of the interior and exterior of your vehicle. This is especially true if you choose a darker tint for your windows.

When choosing a tint percentage, establish what you want your car to look like first to help you decide.

Familiarize Yourself With State Laws

Vehicle window tinting practices need to follow state laws. Tennessee has a different VLT percentage for the windshield than it does for other windows.

VLT, or visible light transmission, is the percentage of visible light that gets through car windows. The lower the VLT percentage, the darker the tint gets. A common example is 5% tint being very dark for vehicles.

The legal tint for a car windshield in Tennessee is 70%, but front side windows, backside windows, and the rearview window can have a 35% VLT. The state also requires drivers to have a label sticker to identify legal tint.

There are only a few cases in which the Tennessee window tint law does not apply. The exemptions include the following:

  • Law enforcement vehicles
  • Vehicles registered in another state
  • Private investigator vehicles

Those with a medical exemption must receive a prescription from a doctor stating that they require special window treatment.

Establish the Reason for Getting a Window Tint

Car window tinting can help reduce the sun's glare, protect your privacy, and cools and protects the interior of your car. The reason you choose to get a window tint will help you determine what film to get.

For example, if you want to block UV rays, a translucent film with at least 50% or more window tint percentage can help. For complete privacy, get a darker window tint.

DIY Tinted Windows

When it comes to DIY tinted windows vs. window tinting services, the only real advantage of DIY is that it is cheaper. When you hire a window tinting company, you'll ensure a high-quality job is done.

Although applying window tint is not difficult for someone who is handy, you'll need a clean area, lots of patience, and a few hours of your time.

An experienced professional can generally do a better job. Plus, the work of a professional often comes with a warranty.

Auto Window Tinting: Is It Right for Your Car?

Auto window tinting can change the appearance of your car, so factor that into your decision to tint. If you are looking for more privacy, protection for your interior, and a reduction of the sun's glare, auto tinting is right for you.

For premier window tinting, hire professionals to get the job done. A DIY effort could lead to more harm than good.
